I've just finished re-re-reading Emergence by David R. Palmer.

It's also available as an ebook.

(Palmer's writing, in this book, reminded me of Robert A. Heinlein's Podkayne of Mars

My review:

Emergence
This is a very well written coming of age book in a journal format: After a bionuclear war which killed off virtually all humans in the cold war era, Candy Smith-Foster an 11 year old, fifth degree Karate black belt, girl genius sets out to find the next step in human evolution -- homo post hominem.

Along the way she singlehandedly and barehanded kills two full grown adult male bad guys, is almost killed in an auto accident by a speed crazed auto racing fanatic boy genius about her age who becomes her love interest after he nurses her back to health. Then she discovers a plot to kill off the remaining homo post hominems and kills her second full grown adult male before disarming a thermonuclear bomb and riding it back to earth.

Thus (of course) saving the world.

I highly recommend this book to all.
